Messis Magic - Inter Miami Triumphs Despite Setback
Lionel Messi showcased his brilliance on the field, contributing a goal and an assist before an unfortunate leg injury forced him to leave the pitch prematurely during Inter Miami's triumphant 3-1 victory over Nashville in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round-of-16 match.
In a delightful display of teamwork, Messi connected with his former Barcelona companion, Luis Suarez, setting up a goal in the eighth minute, igniting Inter Miami's early lead. The decorated eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient further bolstered his team's advantage with another goal in the first half.
Regrettably, Messi's stellar performance was curtailed when he was substituted in the 50th minute due to a nagging leg injury, as later revealed by coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino. Martino disclosed that Messi had been struggling with discomfort in his leg throughout the game, prompting the decision to withdraw him as a precautionary measure.
Martino elucidated, "He was experiencing overload in the right posterior. We attempted to gauge his ability to continue playing, but the discomfort persisted, so we opted to remove him from the game."
Messi had opted for rest during Sunday’s fixture against Montreal, marking the sole game he has missed this season. Martino indicated that Messi is likely to sit out the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) match against DC United on Saturday, citing a desire to avoid risking further injury.
"I prefer not to take any chances," Martino asserted.
Following Messi's departure, Robert Taylor entered the fray and promptly made his mark by scoring in the 63rd minute, extending Inter Miami's lead to 3-0.
With this impressive victory, Inter Miami secures passage to the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals, boasting a commanding 5-3 advantage in aggregate goals over the course of the series.
